BORDER

THURS 7 MAY

A mesmerising and genre-defying tale set in modern-day Sweden. Tina is a customs officer with a nose for trouble. She can literally smell human emotions. But when a mysterious male traveller’s scent confounds her, she’s faced with life-changing insights about who she is and what she wants.

LONG TEXT:
“Who am I?” It’s a question lurking in the mind of customs officer Tina. She’s always assumed that “different” means “worse”, but when she meets the mysteriously magnetic Vore, who shares her unusual gift of being able to smell emotions, particularly fear and guilt, she begins to learn the truth about herself. Mixing romance, Nordic noir, social realism and the supernatural, this affecting film, directed by Iranian–Danish Ali Abbasi, defies neat genre classification whilst mining the otherness of being an outsider in a closed community.

Border was Sweden’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards and won the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, along with the awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
