Kore-eda’s film is a complex, subtle and mysterious tale that builds to an extraordinary ending. It’s an intricate and nuanced family drama in the classic Japanese style in which this director has made himself a modern master. For all its calm gentleness, the film is based on a news story and is devastatingly clear-sighted about the dysfunctions and hypocrisies of modern Japan. As always, Kore-eda elicits wonderful performances from his cast. A rich, satisfying and intelligent film.
