The Passion of the Christ ( 2004) is a biblical drama produced, co-written and directed by Mel Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, Maia Morgenstern as the Virgin Mary, and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene.
The film primarily covers the final twelve hours of Jesus’ life, beginning with the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the insomnia and grievance of the Virgin Mary, the brutal scourge and crucifixion and ending with a brief depiction of his resurrection. The dialogue is entirely in reconstructed Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin but has full English subtitles.
The film was controversial and received largely polarized reviews, but it received three Academy Award nominations in 2005 and is currently the highest-grossing Christian film of all time..
