1976

SYNOPSIS

Carmen, the stylish and enigmatic wife of a Santiago hospital doctor, while redecorating the family’s holiday home by the sea, is approached by a local priest and persuaded to tend to a young “guest” of his who’s been shot.  Carmen, disgusted by Pinochet’s dictatorship and the smug complicity of those of her own class, agrees.  1976 is an elegantly circumspect and thrillingly assured drama where, although violence is kept firmly off-screen, its consequences are all too obvious.  An award-winning film enhanced by an eerily effective electronic score, 1976 is a great example of Chilean anti-fascist noir.
