LUZZU

SYNOPSIS

Luzzu – Maltese-American filmmaker Alex Comilleri’s feature film debut – is named after Malta’s small brightly coloured fishing boats.  It focuses on the plight of the island’s fishermen in a world where traditional skills and methods are increasingly being abandoned for more lucrative sources of income.  His subtle vérité approach compellingly captures an endangered community culture.

Jesmark Scicluna, a fisherman by trade, who plays the film’s main protagonist, went on to win the special jury award for acting at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021.

Luzzu was Malta’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category of the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.
