ANIMATED TALES

WED 21 JUNE

With over 400 animation awards,  including 6 Oscar Nominations and 4 BAFTA winners in the past four years, the National Film and Television School produces world class talent.

Their time at NFTS gives them the support, resources and freedom to express their creativity and inventiveness. The result is an amazing array of work that would be impossible to realise any other way.

Your host for the night, Robert Bradbrook, is head of department and the creative force behind such international acclaim.

If you are an aspiring animator, applications for the Directing Animation MA are open until the 6th July – more info here: www.nfts.co.uk/animation

HOSTED BY ROBERT BRADBROOK – HEAD OF ANIMATION AT THE NATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION SCHOOL.

From the early 90’s Robert has been a committed practitioner and advocate of animation, resulting in international acclaim for his work.

Between personal films Robert runs his own company, and provides animation for film, television and new media.

As well as being the Head of Animation at the NFTS, Robert gives storytelling workshops to colleges around the world and to production companies, such as Aardman.

2014 BAFTA Winner…
Sleeping with the Fishes – Yousif Al-Khalifa (2013)
Traditional 2D Drawn Animation
Sonja lives a lonely life as a fishmonger until one day a delivery man turns up who looks like a rainbow trout.
2015 BAFTA Winner…
The Bigger Picture – Daisy Jacobs (2014)
Life-sized painted characters in 3D environments.
The Bigger Picture is a larger than life-size animated film that tells the stark and darkly humorous tale of caring for an elderly parent. One son flees when anything practical needs to be done, leaving the other an unwilling martyr – and Mother doesn’t make it easy for either of them. In a surreal and comic world, the brothers endeavour to deal with a situation most of us face in the end – what shall we do with our parents?
2016 BAFTA Winner…
Edmond – Nina Gantz (2015)
Stop-Motion and 2d line-drawn animation
Edmond’s impulse to love and be close to others is strong… maybe too strong. As he stands alone by a lake contemplating his options, he goes on a journey backwards through his life, and revisits all his defining moments in search for the origin of his desires
2017 BAFTA Winner…
A Love Story – Anushka Naanayakkara (2016)
Stopframe Animation on Multiplane with Rigged Puppets
A Love Story is a beautiful short animation taking place in a universe entirely made of wool. It’s love at first sight for our two beings… but will their relationship survive the onslaught of depression that takes over their lives
Damned – Richard Phelan (2011)
Digital Digital 2D
An over-ambitious beaver goes too far when he gets the chance to realise his ultimate dream.
Some dreams are just too big.
Mend and Make Do – Bexie Bush (2014)
Stop-motion/pixellation
Cup of tea? Come and take a seat in Lyn’s cosy front room, hear her story of love during wartime and watch as her belongings come alive with the hope, fear and humour of one spirited lady. Equal parts documentary, animation and magic, Mend and Make Do features the original voice of Lyn Schofield of Southport, Merseyside, a woman with a lifetime of tales to tell.
