2023/4 Commissions

We are pleased to announce our  2023 commissions selected from a strong field of applicants.

Film makers from our fiction commissions each receive £1000 this year towards the production of a short film based in and around Palmers Green in North London. All of the films explore suburban life, embracing locality while expressing individual artistry.
The commissions, which will continue annually, are open to all filmmakers, of any style or experience.

We are also pleased to announce tour documentary commission for 2023, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in collaboration with Enfield Council. 

 

Film Makers: Sara Chia-Jewell and Antonis Papamichael.

Sara and Antonis are a directing duo passionate about fun. Sara is from Malaysia and Antonis is from Cyprus – both are Commonwealth countries. They now live in the Commonwealth mothership (the UK). They have previously been involved in projects which appeared in festivals such as Venice, Palm Springs and Encounters.

Film Makers: No CONTEXT Productions

James Newman, Harrison Newman and Tom Waterhouse form a formidable team with wide experience in film writing, directing and production. Between them, past project include “Viskar I Vinden,” “Do Not Touch,” and the captivating film “The Chop.” “God Damn Evil Beasts,” and “When One Door Closes.”

Title: Amigos

Rent a Friend app called Amigos has come to London. Dustin, a sociopath is dumped by his sugar momma,  loses his flat and comfy lifestyle when he realises he needs to be a better friend to earn a living.

Film Makers : Jill Worsley, Stephanie Hazel and ADam Shakinovsky

Jill is a BAFTA nominated documentary director. Her first fiction short film as a writer ‘Fred Gets Feedback’, was produced by BBC Writers room and won a Rose D’Or, and her latest comedy ‘Choked Up’ is on the festival circuit, screening at multiple BAFTA & BIFA qualifying festivals.

Adam started his career in NYC on Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and The Whale, before becoming Head of Production at Agile Films, then setting up his own production company ‘Bru’. He has exec produced and produced many short films, working with high profile talent like Angelica Huston and Maxine Peake.

Steph is making the move into producing after a decade of working in the industry as an actor. She has produced and written her own shorts, including the award winning ‘Out Of View’, that sought to raise awareness of the rise of domestic abuse during the pandemic. 

Title: Where To?

Have you ever thought about all the snippets of conversation a taxi driver witnesses in a day? ‘Where To?’ takes us into that world, as a local cabbie experiences one moment in dozens of different lives, whether joyful, painful, horrific or hilarious.  He navigates the usual and the unusual – the rude, the drunk, the endlessly chatty, the naughty pets, the break-ups and make-ups. Through all those trivial & life changing exchanges that make up a tapestry of life, he comes to a realisation about his own. 

Film Maker: WILL WEBB

Will Webb is a writer-director based in London. Will was awarded the BFI Future Film award for Fiction in 2015, selected as a Hospital Club Emerging Creative in 2017, and a member of the BAFTA Crew programme 2017- 2020. He directed a short for Channel 4’s Random Acts in 2016 and has also made essay films for the BFI, Arrow and Little White Lies, and promo films for the Barbican and the Royal Opera House. He is a director of Mountain Way productions, freelance video essayist and freelance director.

Title: MARKET DAY

The project is Talkies’ second documentary commission working in collaboration with Enfield Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project focuses on a day in the life of the thriving Edmonton Green Indoor Market.
